Creating a unique smell is an art which is being practiced since forever. Fragrances are used from ancient times. It is a symbol of luxury and creates a statement. Smelling good makes one confident too.
Creating a list of scents can be difficult as thousands of notes are available, and different blends give a unique smell. The possibility of fragrances is endless; therefore, this perfume making art is an ancient one. To this date, the perfume industry is a glamorous one. People’s affection towards scents is increasing exponentially.
Categorizing Scents
There is no fixed category for scents. Depending on various things, smells can be classified.
Notes: It can be categorized based on the elements a perfume is made of. Then again, perfume is usually made of many different elements from different categories. Still, if a fragrance has a more floral note, it can be considered a floral scent.
Occasion: Different fragrances are associated with different types of events. Light perfumes are considered daytime perfumes, whereas strong and sensual ones are for the night. Refreshing scents are for summer, springtime, and long-lasting smells are for winter.
Gender and age: Fruity and florally scents are used more by women. Where men use musky and aquatic scents, sweet smells are commonly known for young women. Stronger smells are more for mature people.
Initial Projection: The type of smell a fragrance initially projects can describe a perfume. If the smell seems floral, woody, or citrusy, we can make a perfume scents list depending on that.
The following list shows different types of fragrances classes depending on how they smell, what makes them smell like that.
A List of Scents
There is no fixed listing of smells. Every day something new is being invented. Perfume makers are coming out with amazing and unique perfumes. To understand the essence of perfume, some groups are formed to represent different types of fragrances.
1. Floral
The floral scent is the most popular scent of all. These scents are composed of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) or aroma compounds. These compounds come from floral tissue. Flowering plant tissues provides several hundred different compounds for various combinations. These several hundred compounds are used to create different types of flowery scents.
The floral scent is created from the petals, where the essential oils are stored. Every flower has a unique smell to attract pollinators. A single flower aroma can have seven to ten different oils. The flowers can be divided into two sub-categories: colorful flowers and white flowers.

- Jasmine
- Lavender
- Lilies
- Violets
- Lilacs
2. Citrus
The citrus fragrance comes from citrus fruits. These fragrances are zesty and refreshing. It does not necessarily have to fruit to have citrus fragrance. Some other ingredients also have citrus scents. These scents are used to give a refreshing and energizing kick to a product. This scent is trendy among scented products. For perfumes, these scents are ideally used in summer perfumes. Some popular citrusy aromas are:
- Orange
- Clementine
- Lemon
- Grapefruit
- Lime
3. Fruity
Fruity scents do not necessarily come from fruits. They sometimes come from leaves or flowers that have a strong fruity smell. Some nuts are also used to create fruity scents. The fruity scent is popular in summer and spring perfumes.

- Peach
- Lychee
4. Aquatic
Aquatic smells are fresh, watery, and light. These types of fragrances give you a feeling like you are on the beach. Aquatic scents are often associated with a soft breeze, ocean, seawater, or clean laundry. They are very inoffensive, no way they are sensual or strong. These types of scents are best for summers. Cucumber or tea also gives an aquatic essence though they are not related to the ocean.

5. Spicy

7. Animalic
Animalic scents can refer to two things. Some scents are byproducts of animals. These types of smells come from animals like musk deer, civet cats, etc. However, nowadays, these smells do not get naturally extracted as it causes animals’ extinction. These scents are made synthetically.
On the other hand, animalic scents also refer to metaphoric animals. Smells that give a strong, animal-like fragrance is also considered animalic scents. Usually, these scents are strong and long-lasting and can be sexy or sensual.

8. Green
The smell that comes to mind after hearing green is freshly cut grass. The scents give the essence of nature, forests, or herbs. These smells are fresh and suitable for summer. This category includes a lot of ingredients with some classic ones. Some popular green elements are:

- Cilantro
- Fern
9. Woody
The name of the category is pretty much self-explanatory. These smells are like woods, also mostly come from woods. Some of them are extracted from natural elements; others are made artificially. Some mosses or moss-like smells are also categorized as woody smells. These scents give a natural, forest, and fresh smell.

10. Earthy
Earthy smells feel like nature. The smell of mud after rain comes to mind when you think about earthy smell. Earthy aromas are refreshing and relaxing. The most common earthy scents are:

Scents can be classified in different ways. Here we gave a list of scents depending on how a perfume initially smells after application. An aquatic fragrance does not necessarily have to be made with aquatic elements. Floral, fruity, citrusy, musky elements can create a perfect blend of aquatic scent. Therefore, it isn’t easy to create a list of scents specifically.
